Publication Feature: Is Health-Care Data the New Blood?

May 2019

This viewpoint, published in the inaugural issue of Lancet Digital Health, discusses the concept of patient “digital specimens,” which can include medical records, sensor data, race, education level, posts on social media, bill payments, and Amazon orders. The authors advocate the use of these digital samples, like the use of other protected biospecimens, be limited to validated and beneficial uses for the donor and that patient privacy be fully protected. The authors are Andy Coravos, research collaborator at the Harvard-MIT CRS and Eric Perakslis, from Duke University and Harvard DBMI.
