Publication Feature: Teens Still Commonly Prescribed Opioids

Adolescents and young adults are at high risk for opioid misuse after exposure from medical treatment. However, despite a number of national initiatives aimed at reducing opioid prescribing rates, this study found that physicians continue to prescribe opioids at high rates to adolescents seen in emergency departments and other ambulatory care settings. For certain common conditions, such as dental disorders or clavicle fractures, rates of opioid prescribing exceed 40%.
